Inaugural Youth Advisory Council Meeting

Last night, we had an awesome group of young Shakopee residents join us for the first meeting of our Youth Advisory Council. The students ranged from 2nd Grade (AWESOME!!!) to Juniors at Shakopee High School.

The main goal of the Youth Advisory Council meeting was to put together a framework for the Council and find out what issues and policies were on the mind of our group.

I am incredibly impressed with the talent and wisdom our Shakopee kids have and look forward to working with them on a couple of different levels as we move into the 2020 session.

Youth Advisory Council Goals

I have two main goals for the YAC.

  1. Receive feedback on issues that are before me at the MN House of Representatives to get a solid understanding of the Shakopee youth’s perspective.
  2. Create policy and bills for Minnesota that is important to Shakopee youth.

YAC Structure

The students decided to meet on Monday evenings every other month at the library and open to anyone 18 and under living in House District 55a.

They also preferred to build a Youth Advisory Council structure (that I prefer) that is organized and led by the students. My office will provide administrative support and guidance, but leaders will be elected in January to lead meetings and plan agendas.

Next Youth Advisory Council Meeting

The next Shakopee Youth Advisory Council meeting will be organized with help of three youth leaders who attended the meeting last night. It will be:

  • Monday, November 18, 2019
  • 7 PM
  • Shakopee Library – Large meeting room
